In ancient times India was considered as one of the leading lights of the world and its glory was spread far and wide all across the corners of the earth. Throughout its history, India has evolved and reinvented herself. India is the birthplace and cradle of four popular religions of the world, namely, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism.The contributions and achievements of Indians in the fields of science & technology, architecture, and culture are widely acknowledged.
Tamil Nadu, the southern state in India holds a unique position in the sphere of culture as it is a distinguished region where the cultural symbols of the country are preserved in their original form making ‘Enchanting Tamil Nadu’, a much sought after destination where modern technology and contemporary vitality co-exist with tradition and old architecture.
With an area of 130, 058 sq. km and a population of over 55 million, Tamil Nadu is the eleventh largest populated and the third most industrialized state in India. Tamil Nadu’s civilization is one of the oldest civilizations of the world and is also called the ‘cradle of South Indian temple architecture’. It is the home of Dravidian art and culture, characterized by its distinctive music and dances, its amazingly decorated temples with their soaring towers and its plentiful colourful festivals. Dravidian style of temple architecture is visible in most of the temples of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu is referred as the ‘Land of Temples’ because there are more than 30, 000 temples in this state. Tamil Nadu with its picturesque beauty, ancient temples that easily pass of, as remarkable architectural edifices, well-developed infrastructure and wonderful sightseeing destinations are a tourist's haven abounding in cultural delights.
Situated on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal – Chennai (Madras) is the capital and the largest city in the State of Tamil Nadu. Also known as the 'Gateway to South India', Chennai is an important port and industrial base. Chennai's culture reflects its diverse population and is known for its wealth of arts and literature. Chennai has a vibrant theatre scene and is an important centre for the Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form of Tamil Nadu. Chennai is also popular for the glitz and glamour of Kollywood, the 'Tamil film industry'. Popular festivals include - Pongal - in January and Tamil New Year's Day - in April.
Founded by the illustrious Barrister-at-law, Shri. V.L. Ethiraj in 1948, Ethiraj College today is one of the select colleges nationwide recognized as College with Potential for Excellence. A premier institution dedicated to the cause of women’s education has been ranked as number one in the Internal Quality Audit carried by IQAC of the University of Madras and is accredited with "A" Grade by NAAC. The Aided and Self Supporting streams together have 27 UG courses, 19 PG courses with Departments offering Research Guidance/Supervision for 12 M.Phil and 6 Ph.D programs. It has grown into a glorious edifice with strength of almost 6500 students in the Aided/ Self- supporting streams. Thousands of students have gone out of the portals of the Institution, carrying with them the aura and dignity of the Institution itself. The students are occupying enviable positions all over the world from diplomatic circles to law and order to teaching and caring for the under privileged and have won National awards for their contribution to the Nation's cultural legacy. 0
The Department of History was established in the year 1948 offering History as an ancillary subject and became a Major Department in 1957. It was upgraded as a postgraduate department in 1982 and as a research department offering M.Phil in 1986 and Ph.D programme in 1988. As the pioneering college in the area of Tourism and Travel Management Studies in the city, an undergraduate programme in Tourism and Travel Management was introduced in 2003, the first of its kind in the city of Chennai. The Department has qualified faculty members actively engaged in teaching and research activities.
The objective of this conference is to provide a forum for academics, researchers and professionals from industry and academia to discuss new concepts, progressive methodologies and innovative practices in social sciences. The conference will also include a variety of presenters, representing wide range of disciplines. The deliberations of the conference will focus on varied themes such as Art, Culture and Society, Education, Gender, History/ Allied Subjects, Language, Media and Society, Psychology and Sociology, Tourism, Business, Hospitality and Management.
